Invisalign continues to gain popularity as a clear alternative to traditional braces because the transparent plastic trays are considered more comfortable and convenient than bulky metal brackets. Plus, you can remove them for meals, meaning there are no dietary restrictions to worry about.

However, many patients wonder if it’s okay to enjoy drinks like coffee with their plastic trays still in their mouths. Continue reading to learn more about why your dentist recommends taking your aligners out before enjoying a cup of joe!

What is Invisalign?

If you’re seeking a more discreet solution than standard orthodontics for repositioning your pearly whites, you might benefit from Invisalign. This treatment utilizes transparent plastic trays that fit snugly over your teeth to shift them into their ideal placements gently. The smooth material won’t gauge the tender tissues inside your mouth like metal braces. Plus, it’s clear, so it doesn’t detract from your appearance.

You must wear Invisalign for 20 to 22 hours a day to prevent them from reverting to their original positions. Then, after a week or two, your dentist will provide a new pair to wear to account for the ongoing movement of your teeth.

Can I Drink Coffee with Invisalign?

If you’re like an estimated 66% of American adults, you enjoy at least one cup of coffee per day. This beany beverage is infamous for its caffeine content that can give you a blast of energy or help you focus throughout the day.

That said, your dentist recommends removing your clear aligners to eat and drink anything besides water. The plastic material is only intended to last for a few weeks so it’s not overly durable and can be damaged if you’re not careful.

For instance, overly hot temperatures can warp the plastic so it no longer fits correctly. Your provider will likely need to re-order a replacement set of trays, which can potentially add several weeks to your overall treatment timeline. Not only that, but coffee contains tannins, a natural ingredient found in many plants that gives them their bitter flavor. Unfortunately, they also cause stains that can leave your clear aligners looking dark and dingy.

How Can I Keep My Invisalign Clear?

Dirty trays defeat the purpose of choosing an ‘invisible’ orthodontic treatment. You can keep them looking and feeling fresh by:

  • Maintaining your routine. Your aligners cover your teeth and gums the majority of the day and night, giving bacteria ample time to thrive. You should remove them twice daily to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. Take time to also gently scrub your trays with a soft-bristled brush and mild dish soap that won’t abrade the material.
  • Keep their case with you. Carry your carrier case with you so that you have a safe place to store them when you remove them to eat or drink anything.
  • Soak them daily. You can also soak your trays for about 15 minutes every day in a solution of special Invisalign Cleaning Crystals that remove 99% of unwanted germs.

If you’re still concerned about the state of your Invisalign, the best next step is to contact your dentist!
